Thank you for 5 years.

Five years ago, we stood up in front of 200 people… God & our grandparents… and said “I Do”. We promised to be together forever, to stick it out in thick & thin. We knew people were betting against us. Heck, some of them had even TOLD us they didn’t think we’d make it. But we plunged ahead and did it anyway,  and we were convinced we’d prove them all wrong.

Five years ago today, we got married.

And not even 10 months later, we sat on the floor and cried and talked very seriously about giving up, because it wasn’t working.

That was reality for us. It wasn’t working. We’d bruised each other deeply, and we stopped trying to make it better. We were roommates, and not even amicable ones. We’d stopped dreaming about a future together, and just got by on our daily routine. We didn’t even have the energy to fight… nothing seemed worth it.

Not even a year after we said “forever”, we both admitted we were probably looking at the end.

So when people ask me about our wedding… about the significance of our 5th anniversary… it’s a little hard to talk about. Sure, we dressed up and got married and threw a party on April 19th, 2008. We’d already been together for 4 years, so getting married was the next thing to do. It was time, and we thought we were ready.

But the last weekend of January, in 2009, THAT’S when we made the promises that count.

We sat in that hotel room, and we cried, and we held each other’s hands, and we made some choices that needed to be made. We recommitted to each other… to this promise. We apologized, and asked for forgiveness. I wasn’t wearing a white dress, and nobody was there to see it… but those are the promises I remember most.

If we hadn’t gotten married on April 19th, 2008, we probably wouldn’t have gotten married at all. Without a doubt, that day will always be important to me. But if it weren’t for January 29th, 2009, we’d be a statistic… a failed marriage. I’m so glad I don’t have to know what my life would look like without you.

My love, on our 5th anniversary, THANK YOU.

I know I’m hard to live with. I’m hard to keep happy. I’m hard to please. I’m hard to understand. I’m hard to work with. To steal from one of our favorite songs, I am quite simply Hard to Love.

But you do it anyway. You do it loudly and fiercely and loyally and you never ever quit. I don’t deserve you, no matter how often you say it’s the other way around.

Thank you for April 19th, and thank you for January 29th. Thank you for forgiving me, and working with me, and believing in us. Thank you for choosing US over the voices of people that said we couldn’t make it. Thank you for 9 years together, for 5 years married, and for a little over four years of truly being IN THIS TOGETHER.

You’re the absolute love of my life, and no matter where this journey takes us, I’m glad it’s together.

bobbileigh - Happy Anniversary! Thank you so much for sharing this, we as a society don’t talk about our failures (or near failures) enough and then others that have gone through it or are going through it feel like they are in it alone and shouldn’t talk about it either. It is so refreshing to hear a story like this of a near failure, but then coming out on the other side of it better. This is applicable to all things in life not just marriage, so thank you.

April 19, 2013 - 6:42 am

Loren Bell - Hi. I’m ugly crying. You know, most people would have glossed over those parts between April 19 and January 29. Thank you for not doing that. Even the hard, ugly, mad parts of life are beautiful because they seem to make the great parts shine that much more brightly. Thank you for making that promise because your love inspires a whole bunch if people. Happy nine, five, and four years! <3

Ashley - I am sitting here like a goofball with tears in my eyes staring at my computer screen. That was amazing and you are some amazing people. Thank you for your complete honesty and realness. There are not many people that admit how difficult life is sometimes. Especially when it comes to weddings and marriages- most everyone talks like it is a rose colored process. You two just proved to me what a real marriage is and how you make it successful. I wish you two nothing but the best and many many years (ie. 50+ years!) for a happy and successful life together!

Tiffany & Alan : Wedding Pt. 2

Welcome back! If you didn’t see Part 1 of Tiffany & Alan’s Austin nuptials, then you’re really missing out and you need to scroll down immediately & fix that. Their ceremony at Chapel Dulcinea was dreamy & gorgeous, and we’re picking up today just minutes after the happy couple said “I Do”!

It was very important to Tiffany & Alan that they have lots of time to enjoy their wedding day together, which we of course LOVED. The beautiful soft light we were getting up around the chapel just made our lives even better!

We made our way to Driftwood, TX for Tiffany & Alan’s reception at the Wildflower Barn. With lights strung in the trees, Texas flowers on the tables, and fajitas in everyone’s bellies, the scene was set for a gorgeous night under the stars.

This field of bluebonnets sure was incredible, but there were security cameras & signs making sure we didn’t set foot in the flowers. It’s ok… they look beautiful from a distance.:)

Of course, the bride & groom aren’t the only ones who needed portraits in the bluebonnets. We were happy to oblige!:)

I pretty much died over this first dance image Mack shot… it perfectly captures the mood of the evening!

whoa. That’s drool-worthy, right there.

Congratulations, Tiffany & Alan! We’re so honored that you invited us along on this journey with you, and we hope you love this collection as much as we do. Have a wonderful time in Hawaii!

Tiffany & Alan : Wedding Pt. 1

It was funny, really… the way things all worked out. I told Mack that I was adding Chapel Dulcinea in Austin to our “dream board”, a list of places we want to shoot weddings. And 10 days later, I get a call from Tiffany to shoot her wedding there. And because we’d already met Tiffany & Alan at her sister Courtney’s 2011 wedding, we knew it was a good match. In the span of about 45 minutes, we went from initial inquiry to officially on the calendar!

Tiffany has been one of our most laid-back brides ever. She knew she wanted her wedding day to be low-stress & high-energy, with the focus set squarely on celebrating. She & Alan chose the gorgeous (and FREE!) Chapel Dulcinea as the backdrop for their ceremony, followed by a short drive to the Wildflower Barn in Driftwood, TX for their reception. But we’ll get to all that reception prettiness tomorrow.:)Today is all about the first half of our day!

We met Tiffany at her little cottage in Dripping Springs, where she quite literally bounced out the front door to great us. THIS was a woman ready to get hitched!

The happy couple’s pup Lily wasn’t sure what all the fuss was about, but she stayed quiet on that pillow all day long!

The sun was high & bright when it was time for our Bride & Groom to have their First Sight, but we had lots of nice coverage from thick cedar trees behind the cottage.

The drive up to Chapel Dulcinea was absolutely gorgeous… but nothing can top the view from the chapel!

The church has stone benches for 12 guests, but chairs were brought in for a few more. Tiffany & Alan had a great group of people there to share their special moment!

Mr. & Mrs. Giradot!

Such a happy little family!

Aw… Lily is smiling, too!:)

Be sure you come back tomorrow to see Part 2 of this gorgeous event… the reception space was absolutely dreamy!

April 17, 2013 - 7:49 pm

April 19, 2013 - 4:00 pm

Mike - Congratulations, Tiffany & Alan! I just love this whole set. I’ll ditto Meg’s comment. Bright, clean, simply fabulous. I love the B&Ws, too! #13 & #22 are just gorgeous!!

Amarae : Bridals

We traveled to San Antonio for Amarae’s bridal portrait session, and had a lot of fun exploring locations that are new to us! The San Antonio Botanic Garden is lovely, but what really stole our hearts was the Japanese Garden a few miles away. Such incredible views!! I really wish we had something like this in DFW, but as it is, I’ll just look forward to the next time we’re able to shoot in San Antonio.:)

Our shoot was running a bit behind schedule, and heavy clouds rolled in and threatened to steal all our light, but Amarae was a rock star. She knew we had to work fast, and she really rocked this session! Enjoy some of our favorites shots!

This shot of Mack’s feels like a Disney princess moment to me… but that’s kind of Amarae all over.:)

WHOA. Hello, gorgeous! One of my favorite bridals of all time!

Amarae & Brandon’s wedding will be ready to blog early next week, but stick with us… we have Tiffany & Alan’s wedding coming up tomorrow!:)

Tiffany & Alan AND Brandon & Amarae Got Married!

This weekend, we were lucky enough to capture two truly stunning weddings. They were completely different events, but both filled with so much love & joy. The weather in both Austin & Houston was beyond gorgeous… everything our brides were hoping for. We straggled home Sunday afternoon totally exhausted, but really really thrilled with what we accomplished. We can call McG’s first double header of 2013 a rousing success!:)

As always, there’s a lot more to come from these weddings. We’ll be sharing all our favorite images from Tiffany & Alan’s event later this week, and Brandon & Amarae early next week. But there’s no better way to kick off a Monday than a wedding sneak peek… at least as far as I’m concerned!

Get excited, and TELL us you’re excited! The community of commenters we’ve built here makes all those late nights we spend blog-prepping totally worth it.:)

We started our weekend with a drive down to Austin to celebrate with Tiffany & Alan. I loved how Tiffany’s wedding day started… totally laid back with just her Mom & Sister helping her get prettified!

This beautiful couple’s ceremony took place at Chapel Dulcinea, and oooh-la-la was it a dream to shoot!

The reception was at the Wildflower Barn in Dripping Springs, and the weather was ridiculously perfect. Sincerely, I don’t think we’ve EVER had better temperatures for an outdoor reception!

Yes yes yes… much prettiness still to come from that event.

We kicked it into high gear again on Saturday with a trip down to Brookshire, TX for Amarae & Brandon’s wedding. They booked the new venue Pecan Springs while the property was still under construction, but their faith paid off… it was a beautiful backdrop for their big day!

Amarae didn’t let a big dress slow her down at all… she kicked off her shoes & danced all night! SUCH a fun reception!

Good stuff, right??

We’re back first thing tomorrow to share a few images from Amarae’s San Antonio bridal session, so we’ll see you on the flip side!
